Elective National Convention

The atmosphere at Eagle Square, Abuja, was nothing short of electric this past weekend as over 8,000 delegates, 31 State Governors, and party faithful gathered for the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Under the theme "Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda," the convention served as a powerful affirmation of the party's stability and its unwavering commitment to the transformative leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

From the crack of dawn, the iconic Eagle Square filled with the colours of the APC — green, white, and the unmistakable energy of a party that knows where it is going. Buses and convoys from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory converged on Abuja, carrying delegates who represented every ward, every local government, and every demographic of Nigeria's vast political landscape. The message was unmistakable: the APC is not a Lagos party, not a Northern party — it is a national movement.

Party stalwarts, senior ministers, serving senators and House members, state assembly speakers, and civil society observers packed the galleries. International observers from across the African continent watched as Nigeria's ruling party demonstrated something increasingly rare in African politics — a peaceful, structured, and credible internal transition of leadership conducted in full public view.

A Formidable New National Working Committee

In a display of internal democracy and strategic cohesion, the party successfully transitioned its leadership through a consensus arrangement that prioritizes stability ahead of the 2027 general elections. We are proud to announce the emergence of a formidable National Working Committee (NWC):

🎓
National Chairman
Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda
📜
National Secretary
Sen. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, Ph.D.
🌍
Dep. National Chairman (North)
Dr. Ali Bukar Dalori
🌿
Dep. National Chairman (South)
Dr. Benjamin Obi Nwoye

Professor Yilwatda, in his acceptance speech, reaffirmed his dedication to building a "strong and respected political institution," echoing the President's call for deepened grassroots engagement.

The new chairman's emergence was the product of weeks of careful consultation across party chapters, zonal caucuses, and the Presidency. Sources close to the process describe it as a masterclass in internal party diplomacy — one that balanced the competing interests of the North and South, the old guard and the reformers, without fracturing the coalition that brought APC to power in 2015 and kept it there through successive cycles.

Senator Basiru, assuming the role of National Secretary, brings with him a wealth of legislative experience and a reputation for meticulous institutional management. His doctoral background and years at the Senate provide a complementary counterweight to the professorial energy of the new Chairman. Together, they represent an NWC that is simultaneously intellectual and street-wise — exactly what the party's next phase demands.

The appointments of Dr. Dalori and Dr. Nwoye as Deputy National Chairmen for the North and South respectively were widely praised as a masterstroke of geographic and political balance. Both have deep roots in their regions and command the respect of governors, senators, and grassroots mobilisers alike. As the 2027 election cycle approaches, their roles will be critical in translating the Renewed Hope Agenda into ward-level electoral victories.

President Tinubu: "Our Greatest Strength is Our Unity"

The highlight of the convention was the keynote address by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Addressing the sea of supporters, the President reminded the nation that the APC is not just a political vehicle, but a "home for national transformation."

Speaking for over an hour to sustained applause, President Tinubu walked delegates through the reform journey — from the removal of the fuel subsidy on his very first day in office, to the unification of the foreign exchange market, the record-breaking federal revenue, the new minimum wage, and the landmark Tax Reform Acts now reshaping Nigeria's fiscal architecture. He was unapologetic, forceful, and at times visibly moved by the sacrifices he acknowledged Nigerians have made.

"Political parties do not fail only through electoral defeats. Often, they falter when ego overrides ideology... We must guard against those tendencies at all costs. This Convention sends one clear message: Our party is strong, united, and ready for the future."

The President also addressed the ongoing reforms, acknowledging the sacrifices made by Nigerians while assuring the nation that these "tough decisions" are the foundation for a prosperous tomorrow. He further defended the Electoral Act 2026 as a product of robust legislative scrutiny, while emphasizing his belief in a vibrant opposition.

On the economy, he cited figures that drew prolonged cheers: foreign reserves now at $49.5 billion — the highest in eight years — inflation dropping from a peak of over 34% to 15%, and crude oil production recovering from one million barrels per day to 1.5 million. "These are not propaganda," the President said firmly. "These are facts. And the facts are on our side."

He spoke with particular passion about the young people of Nigeria — the beneficiaries of the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, the students receiving interest-free loans through NELFUND, and the entrepreneurs accessing BOI financing at record levels. "This government is not governing for the powerful," he declared. "We are governing for the possible — and that means every young Nigerian with a dream deserves a fighting chance."

A Party Unified, A Party Ready

Beyond the speeches and the pageantry, political analysts watching the convention pointed to something more significant: the absence of fracture. In a country where political conventions routinely produce parallel congresses, court injunctions, and dueling communiqués, the APC's 4th convention was conspicuously clean. Not a single credible legal challenge was filed. Not a single governor walked out. The consensus held — and it held decisively.

This unity is not accidental. It is the product of months of deliberate coalition management by the Presidency and the outgoing party executive. Multiple rounds of consultations were held at Aso Rock, at state government houses, and in private residences across the country. The goal was always the same: arrive at Eagle Square with one voice. That goal was achieved — and the political significance of that achievement cannot be overstated as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The new NWC now inherits a party that controls the Presidency, a majority in the National Assembly, and governorships in 22 of Nigeria's 36 states. With the machinery of incumbency behind them and a reform agenda that is beginning to deliver measurable results, the APC enters the 2027 cycle from a position of considerable — if not unassailable — strength.

The Electoral Act 2026: Cementing Democratic Integrity

One of the convention's most substantive moments came when President Tinubu addressed the Electoral Act 2026 — a piece of legislation that has drawn both praise and scrutiny in equal measure. The President was direct: the Act was not designed to entrench any party or any individual. It was designed to make Nigerian elections freer, fairer, and harder to manipulate.

Key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 include strengthened penalties for vote-buying, enhanced technical infrastructure requirements for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), clearer timelines for the resolution of electoral disputes, and expanded protections for election observers — both domestic and international. "We do not fear a strong opposition," the President said. "We welcome it. Because a strong opposition means a strong democracy. And a strong democracy means a strong Nigeria."

Civil society representatives in attendance welcomed the President's commitment, though several noted that implementation — not legislation — would be the true test of the Act's value. The APC, for its part, has committed to cooperating fully with INEC in the lead-up to 2027, and the new NWC is expected to establish a dedicated electoral integrity desk within its first 30 days.

🎂
A Leader Turns 74
The convention coincided with the 74th birthday of our Principal and President. In characteristic selfless fashion, President Tinubu opted for a low-key celebration — focusing instead on the work of national renewal. As Renewed Hope Ambassadors, we celebrate his vision, his resilience, and his "Jagaban" spirit navigating Nigeria toward sustained growth.

There was something deeply symbolic about a man turning 74 at the helm of a convention dedicated to the future. Delegates broke into spontaneous renditions of birthday songs on at least two separate occasions during the proceedings — moments that briefly softened the intensity of political business with genuine human warmth. The President, visibly moved, responded each time with a characteristic smile and a raised fist.

Those close to the President describe his approach to this milestone birthday as entirely consistent with his character: quiet reflection in the morning, a brief family moment, and then back to work. "He told us he would celebrate properly when the job is done," one senior aide told our team. "And in his mind, the job is never done while there is still a Nigerian who needs help." That ethos — relentless, selfless, forward-looking — is precisely what drew millions to the Renewed Hope movement, and it is what keeps them there.

Our Role as Ambassadors: Three Imperatives

The conclusion of this convention marks the beginning of a new phase of engagement. As the bridge between government reforms and the grassroots, our mission is clearer than ever:

01
Educate
Break down the successes of the Renewed Hope Agenda for every Nigerian to understand — from fuel subsidy reform dividends to the record ₦636B in BOI enterprise financing. Use data, storytelling, and community dialogue to make the reforms real and relatable at the ward level.
02
Mobilize
Support the new National Working Committee in strengthening party structures at the ward and local government levels ahead of the 2027 general elections. Every Ambassador is a precinct captain. Every community engagement is a vote of confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda.
03
Engage
Facilitate the citizen feedback loops that ensure governance remains people-centred — connecting the Aso Rock reform agenda to every community, every household. Listen as much as we speak. Carry grievances upward as faithfully as we carry achievements downward.

The APC has shown, through this convention, that it is capable of internal discipline, democratic renewal, and strategic cohesion at a moment when Nigeria needs exactly those qualities from its governing party. The Renewed Hope Ambassadors stand ready to amplify that message — not merely as cheerleaders, but as accountable partners in the project of national transformation.

We leave Eagle Square not with complacency, but with urgency. The work ahead is significant: millions of Nigerians are still waiting to feel the full benefits of the reforms that have been set in motion. Our role is to ensure the connection between policy and people is never broken — that every household that receives a cash transfer knows why it exists, every student with a NELFUND loan knows who fought for it, and every small business owner benefiting from BOI financing knows that this government sees them.

"The APC is not a building in Abuja. The APC is every woman who wakes up before dawn to trade, every farmer who plants in hope, every young Nigerian who believes this country can be great. We are their party. We must never forget that."

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR — Closing Address, APC Convention 2026

Those words, delivered in the final minutes of his address as the sun dipped behind the Abuja skyline, captured everything this convention was about. Not the elections. Not the positions. Not the power — but the people. The Renewed Hope Ambassadors carry that mandate forward with pride, with purpose, and with an unshakeable belief in a New Nigeria.
